Having just celebrated its first full year of online operations, the Texas Poker Store is already developing a reputation for high-quality but inexpensive poker supplies of any kind, from folding poker tables to poker chips. But owner Jim Paris knew he had to do a whole lot more if he wanted his online business to become a nationally-known brand.
“Once the online store started catching on,” says Paris. “I realized just how many people had an intense interest in just about anything poker-related. Customers, even friends and family would send emails, text or call me to tell me about their favorite poker film or the best poker scene in a TV show ― even the best song about poker.”
Paris started collecting all these references, he says, and decided to use social media to launch a separate blog site: Texas Poker Store Blog, in order to do whatever he could to engage with his customers and to attract new ones.
The Texas Poker Store blog has been allowing Paris to post an increasing array of items of interest to poker fans. “I have high intensity scenes from great poker movies. One customer told me that his wife had no interest in poker until they watched a few of the clips I posted and then rented the films. Now she wants to learn how to play Texas Hold Em!” The blog has everything from scenes from Star Trek episodes focused on poker games to poker tips and lessons from the world’s greatest players.
“The blog is also my way to engage my customers, answer their questions and push out content through Twitter and Facebook. No one wants to read a tweet or an update on Facebook about another product for sale on my site,” Paris says, “but they may be interested in a tweet that asks ‘What would you do if you had this sick poker hand?’ or some other provocative statement.” His philosophy is simple: Produce good content, build an audience and grow your brand until people start recognizing it . . . and the sales will take care of themselves.
“One secret is not limiting ourselves exclusively to poker,” Paris adds. “During the college football season we ran a ‘Predict the Final Score’ contest for Texas A&M football games and awarded the winners a Texas A&M framed mirror for their game rooms. Rooting for the Aggies is another passion in my house so I wanted to get some football fans involved, too.” Paris believes that occasionally branching out into other topics will keep the blog fresh and entertaining over time.
So, fans can expect Paris to talk about sports, the latest crazy video on YouTube or whatever he finds interesting when he’s blogging. “For the most part I’m re-purposing clips and videos already out there,” Paris says, “because if it grabs my attention, it will probably interest others too. At the end of the day, it’s about my customers knowing they can count on good, engaging content when they read my blog, just like they can count on great customer service and products when they shop at the Texas Poker Store.”
