When A Worthy Charity Asks For Help The Texas Poker Store Springs Into Action

There’s one tradition that the Texas Poker Store enjoys all year round and that’s donating to worthwhile causes. This spring, the tradition continues as two very different organizations, the San Antonio Police Department and KAMU-TV and FM, are set to receive sizable donations of TPS poker supplies.

foldingtop-blogIt’s springtime in Texas and the Texas Poker Store is feeling a little spring fever.

“We may be die-hard poker players,” said Jim Paris, owner and chief dealer, “but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy seeing the bluebonnets blooming, the sun shining and everything turning lush and green. Of course, just like in every other season, it also means that we need to spring into action when a worthy organization asks for our help.”

The Texas Poker Store has made a habit of donating poker packages to a variety of local charities, and this spring is no exception.

“I received a call from a representative of the San Antonio Police Department asking if we’d be willing to contribute a number of poker supplies to their annual Summit Training Program in support of their Regional Auto Crimes Team (ReACT),” Paris stated. “I don’t know about anyone else, but when law enforcement calls, I pay attention.”

ReACT is a vehicle crimes task force working to reduce the number of auto thefts and burglaries in the Bexar County area. With funding received from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles’ Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority, ReACT has achieved a sixty-one percent (61%) reduction in the number of auto thefts in Bexar County since the program’s inception twenty-one (21) years ago.

“They told me that our contribution would help defray the cost of training the officers attending the Summit. And they had a unique concept; they planned to set up poker tables for the officers to play some good old Texas Holdem during their down time.

“It really was gratifying to learn that when they thought of staging poker games they immediately turned to the Texas Poker Store.” said Paris. “We are thrilled to be donating table tops, poker chip sets and other poker accessories to the law enforcement officers who will be gathering in San Antonio from across the state of Texas for specialized training . . . and hopefully some great poker!”

In a very different vein, when Paris learned that the KAMU TV & FM Super Auction was scheduled for April 29-May 3, 2013, he called to ask how The Texas Poker Store could help. He knew that the live event — the longest running charity auction in the Brazos Valley — helps pay for the award-winning programming on KAMU-TV, such as the worldwide PBS hit ‘Downton Abbey,’ along with ‘Nova,’ ‘Sesame Street’ and other entertaining and educational shows.

“We enjoy their programming and know that it takes a lot of fund-raising to pay for a non-commercial TV and radio station,” said Paris. “We offered to donate a sizable poker supplies package that could be auctioned off, and the event organizers were delighted to receive our contribution.

“Both events provide us with terrific brand exposure,” Paris explained, “which is obviously great for business. But in return, we get the opportunity to contribute to worthwhile causes. That feels like a win-win to me.”
