The 45th Annual World Series of Poker 2014 – got underway with Event #1: $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em. Roland Reparejo, a California chef turned poker dealer sat down at the poker tables on Thursday afternoon and after outlasting 845 entries to go heads up with Corey Emery (who he quickly defeated after only half-a-dozen hands) won the first gold bracelet of 2014 and a purse of $82,835. All we can say is, congratulations Mr. Reparejo.Roland Reparejo

Now we’re waiting for all the next events to see who will walk away with titles and bracelets as the energy builds towards the main event in July. We are still undecided about who we believe will be at the Final Nine. However we did state that we liked how Vanessa Selbst has been playing and she has already shown to be on top of her game by running over 129 entries to go heads up with Jason Mo in Event #2 $25k Mixed Max NL Hold’em. As of this writing, they were still battling after 60 hands played. Go Vanessa!

This year’s excitement has already started building and we can’t wait till we get there to see the live action play down to the Final Nine. We wish everyone the best of luck! 65 of y’all will walk out with a nice shiny new bracelet!

As we all know the 2014 World Series of Poker gets underway today at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. So are you ready? Are you in it to win it? If not, do you have a favorite you believe may take it all the way to the Final Nine? Could your favorite end up with the 2014 Title and the riches that have become the norm at this world class sporting event?

Daniel Negreanu and Phil IveyThis year there are a total of 64 events leading up to the Main Event and that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in Las Vegas. Plenty of room for just about anyone to take home a bracelet, but the most coveted one will, of course, be there only for the very best. As you would expect we have a few of our own thoughts about who will take the WSOP Championship Title and Bracelet, but for now we’ll keep most of them to ourselves. We will go as far as saying that we really like Vanessa Selbst and we are certain she’ll make a giant push.  We’re also going to keep a very close watch on Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu. They both are due and and they both need a new bracelet.

With what we figure will be between 6,500 to 7,500 players fighting for that elusive pot of gold waiting at the Final Table, getting to it will not be easy. We have friends that will be playing hard to grab the title and we wish them all luck, y’all know who you are.

So as always, we are beginning to feel the excitement of another thrilling World Series of Poker. And as always, there is already a lot of mumbling going on about who will be there. We know that a few of our friends will, including the Alexander brothers from McAllen, Texas. (James Alexander made it all the way to 19th place at the main event and took home $285,408 last year). We will be cheering for both Duane and James from the rails.

Pocket Bullets Paris at WSOP 2013We’re sure that a lot of the older warriors, like Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, and maybe even one of the oldest warriors, Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, will show up. Riess ‘The Beast” Ryan will most likely be there to try to make it two titles in a row. Who knows, it’s still to early to tell, but PokerNews has put out their annual “Watch Out For” list of rookies. They include some very serious newbie players that we would exercise caution with when sitting with them at the same poker tables. Here is PokerNews list of seven to watch at this year’s WSOP:

  1. Ole Schemion – 21, from Germany
  2. Dominik Panka – 22, from Poland
  3. Lukas Berglund – 21, from Sweden
  4. Jordan Westmorland – 24, from America
  5. Christoph Vogelsang – 28, from Germany
  6. Alen Bilic – 25, from Bosnia
  7. Mateusz Moolhuizen – 24, from The Netherlands

We will be keeping a close watch on these guys, and we will definitely be cheering for our friends, the Alexander brothers. We hope to see y’all there.

If you get burned early at the WSOP and you are looking for a high stakes poker game to try to recover your losses, then head over to the east coast and check The Poker Romm at the Seminole Hard Rockinto the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, where you can try your luck again. You can enter any of their events; some have as little as $150 buy-ins, or, if you’re not too shaken by your losses, try their $5,300 buy-in SHRPO Championship – $10 million guarantee starting on Aug. 28. And if you have steel nerves, their $100,000 buy-in Super High Roller Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em starting on Sept. 1st is made for you.
