I’m sure all you poker players and fans have heard of the Poker Hall of Fame, considered one of the highest honors in the poker world. In order to be eligible, poker players must meet the following requirements:

  • must have played poker against acknowledged top competition,
  • Played for high stakes,
  • Played consistently well and gained the respect of peers,
  • And stood the test of time.
  • Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.

Currently, the PHOF has 54 members, mostly because of the new age requirement added in 2011 – a player had to be 40 years old or more before becoming eligible.

But, have you ever heard of the Women in Poker Hall of Fame (WiPHoF?) It was founded in 2008 by Lupe Soto to honor women in poker who have acquired prominence and have made contributions to the poker world. Their goal is not only to honor women in poker but to contribute to causes that benefit the community as well.

This year there were 11 highly qualified candidates (out of 50 submissions) hoping to be inducted into the 2018 Women in Poker Hall of Fame, including Lupe Soto, Kara Scott, Jennifer Tilly, Terry King, Karina Jett and Maria Ho. To be eligible, all the women must have been active as a player and/or industry leader for at least ten years, be a proponent of women in poker, be at least 35 years old and have contributed to the poker world in some meaningful way.

On May 1st, after all the votes were tallied, Maria Ho and Lupe Soto were selected for induction in the 2018 Women in Poker Hall of Fame. Upon learning of her selection, Ho responded, “Wow! What wonderful news to receive! I am honestly incredibly shocked and beyond honored to hear this.”Both women exemplify the organization’s motto, “Celebrating excellence, contribution and performance.”

Soto and Ho will officially join the Hall at the WiPHoF Luncheon Celebration & Induction at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. The event is open to the public, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting their partner, Poker Gives,  a charity that serves homeless veterans and military families in need.

Our question for all the ladies who follow the Texas Poker Store Blog is, who of you are sitting at the poker tables practicing your skills so that someday you could be immortalized by the Women’s Poker Hall of Fame?

Send me your thought or comments.

I am a very loyal fan. I still root for the New York Yankees and Giants, despite not living in NY since 1988. Which is why I am so disappointed, Alexandre Dreyfus, about the absence of a Season Two for the Global Poker League.  The GPL is what turned me into a poker fan. I wrote more than 30 blogs extolling its virtues during its inaugural season; there were times I felt like an (unpaid) marketing director!

Chengdu Pandas GPLI understand that you and Mediarex Enterprises have been incredibly busy, coming up with your new tagline: Compete Globally, Play Locally, while forging strategic relationships in China and India. What’s more, GPL China had an extremely successful six-month season, as teams from 12 cities competed in regional leagues. The winning teams from each city became the championship franchise, and ultimately, the Chengdu Pandas defeated the Hong Kong Treasure Ships to win the first season of GPL China.

Meanwhile, there are six teams that now constitute GPL India, including the Chennai Sharks, Kolkata Creators and Nipun Java, with each team manager already named and Season I poised to launch.  And, based on the tremendous success of the GPL’s first season in Brazil, which fielded its own team, the Sao Paulo Mets, GPL Brazil is already becoming a “thing.”

All very well and good, but still no GPL Season Two (as promised) in the U.S. What happened to my favorite team, the LA Sunset, with poker superstars Fedor Holz, Olivier Busquet and manager, Maria Ho? What happened to the two-year contracts all the brave pioneers of the original GPL signed?

Custom Rockwell Poker TableIf you go to the GPL website like I did, you get a hint of something along the lines of a World Championship coming, with winners of each regional league competing against powerhouse teams from around the world. But there was a link on one page that said Season I has ended. Go on to Season II. I tried, but the link didn’t go anywhere. I hope that isn’t the fate of the original GPL that got me hooked on poker and even get my own poker table!

The 47th Annual World Series of Poker Main Event is down to only 251 players out of a total field of 6,737 participating players, each and every one of them reaching for the same thing, the 2016 WSOP Championship Bracelet. Cashing would be good, reaching the Final Table would be great, but nothing would compare to taking down that final table, outlasting the 6,737 players and walking away with the much-coveted Championship 2016 WSOP BraceletBracelet, not to mention the millions of dollars, eight million to be exact,  to stuff under their mattresses.

Brian Piccioli

As of day four and entering day five the current leader is Bryan Piccioli with a bag of 4,026,000 in chips.  But he will have lots of competition, all eager to take his entire stack. Here is the current breakdown of the top nine players entering day 5:

1. Bryan Piccioli – 4,026,000 – 2. Daniel Colman – 3,711,000 – 3. Thomas Miller – 3,684,000 – 4. Pierre Merlin – 3,396,000
5. Farhad Jamasi – 3,380,000 – 6. Goran Mandic – 3,216,000 – 7. Adi Abugazal – 3,180,000 – 8. Daniel Zack – 3,085,000
9. Melanie Weisner – 3,078,000

Maria Ho There are lots of other notables who are still in it and we all know that anything can happen in poker, so we wouldn’t count any of the 251 remaining players out quite yet. Good luck to each and every one of you. One of our favorites, Global Poker League’s Maria Ho, is definitely still in it and we are sending Lady Luck to stand by her side.

James Alexander and yours truly Pocket Bullets ParisWe’d like to give a shout out to our friends; Tina, Duane and James Alexander for proving that the family that plays together stays together; all three entered the Main Event this year and undoubtedly had a great time. Duane has cashed once before at the WSOP, his brother James has cashed eight times including six times this year, and their mom, Tina, is a poker pro in the making.
