The Global Poker Index, which honors the best and brightest in the poker world, will once again be handing out the coveted hardware for the fourth straight year. As American Poker Awards President, Alexandre Dreyfus, said, “We are very excited to return to the Los Angeles area for a fourth year to reward the most deserving poker players, industry leaders and media members in the business”.

“As always, Dreyus continued, there will be several already-confirmed winners: the top male and top female player on the GPI’s points ranking system, along with the American Player of the Year. This year, Adrian Mateos and Kristen Bicknell will take home the male and female honors, respectfully, although the Spaniard Mateos will collect his award at the European Poker Awards if he isn’t in California for the American version.”

The ceremony, to be held at Andaz West Hollywood rather than at SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills as before, has been scheduled for Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. If you feel motivated to attend the event, please follow this link. More details will certainly follow and we’ll keep you posted.

I love it when the poker community comes out to support a charitable event. So, when St. Jude’s announces a Charity Poker Tournament – the annual St. Jude Against All Odds Celebrity Poker Tournament  — AND I see Daniel Negreanu’s  smiling face prominently displayed, it definitely gets my attention.St. Jude Against All Odd Poker Tournament

I can’t help myself. Whenever I see that Daniel (@RealKidPoker) Negreanu is playing in a poker tournament I get excited. Maybe it’s because he was my first poker player “crush” when I started getting interested in poker. Or, maybe it’s because I watched his awesome documentary, “Kid Poker” and feel like I know him personally.

At any rate, the tournament being held to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital begins on Nov. 3 at Red Rock Casino Hotel & Spa in Las Vegas.

Tickets are still available to the event, which includes an elegant dinner and premium open bar, a live auction and other special features throughout the evening, with the highlight being the No-limit Hold’em Poker Tournament.

There are huge prizes for the top three finishers in the tournament, with a prized seat in the 2018 WSOP Main Event worth $10,000 going to the winner.

Some of the confirmed celebrities who will be in attendance include extreme sports athletes Connor Fields, Gus Kensworthy and Ricardo Laguna as well as actors Joshua Malina, Jennie Garth and Tom Everett Scott, plus many others including Geoff Stults who will be serving as emcee.

But the point is that this poker tournament is truly on behalf of a worthy cause, as the proceeds help St. Jude’s keep its extraordinary promise to ensure that “ families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.”

In an interview with PokerNews,  Negreanu  explained why he’s so supportive of this cause. “St. Jude is like no other place. The research done there is shared around the world. Every hospital in every community benefits and needs our support. It brings me great satisfaction to know that the poker community is coming together to help St. Jude focus on what matters most — saving children’s lives.”

One thing I never thought Daniel Negreanu needed was a sidekick! Don’t get me wrong; his pairing with Phil Hellmuth as ESPN analysts during their coverage of the 2016 WSOP’s Final Table was positively brilliant, and the pair’s expertise was only exceeded by their dazzling repartee (along with the unpredictable and engaging play of last year’s champion, Qui Nguyen) .

At the time, “Kid Poker” repeatedly made the point that people (especially if they’re new to the game) need to have fun and be entertained—which includes different personalities, exciting styles of play, amusing table talk– if they’re going to become the next generation of poker fans. Negreanu always enjoyed “trash-chatting” at the poker table, but it has gotten harder to do with so many serious young players hiding under their headphones and refusing to engage.

Comedian Kevin Hart

Still, I’m not sure he could have predicted that the fun would be provided by actor and comedian Kevin Hart, recently signed as a spokesperson by PokerStars. At a press conference ostensibly called by the superstar, Hart, accompanied by PokerStars Team Pro Negreanu, made the announcement that he was partnering with PokerStars “to make poker fun again.” Hart described how deeply in love with the game he is, and cited that he’d played in the PokerStars Championship Bahamas back in January and was in Monte Carlo where he had just played the Super High Roller; in fact, he said he’d been playing poker for at least 10 years.

But, Hart continued at the presser, he could see what the game is missing, saying, “and the game is missing ME.”  He went on to say that the game has had Daniel for quite some time, and “Daniel has done his job and brought fun to the game, but what Daniel is missing . . . is the black sidekick!”

Kid Poker did not just play straight man to Hart, often showing his own funny side as they fielded questions from the press, making it very obvious that the two had already developed a close relationship. Most importantly, both are clearly dedicated to the concept of elevating poker so that it’s fun to play and fun to watch. What a boon to poker, and what a party for poker fans.

If you have the time, the full press conference can be found on Pokernews.com, along with the article written by Frank Op de Woerd.
