Now that we’ve caught up with our poker history, let’s go back to the movies for a little entertainment. “Deal” stars Burt Reynolds as legendary poker champ, “Tommy Vinson” and Bret Harrison as “Alex Stillman.” We had to dig around for this one because it was a 2008 production that got panned by the critics. It certainly isn’t one of our favorites, but we thought it was worth it if for no other reason than to see some real poker champions from the PokerStars.com team make their film debuts. World Poker Tour commentators Mike Sexton, Vince Van Patten and Courtney Friel play themselves. A number of other professional poker players and poker-playing celebrities, including Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, Greg Raymer, Chris Moneymaker, Joe Hachem, Greg Raymer and Isabelle Mercier are also in the cast.
“Deal” attempts to capture the excitement of the World Poker Tour as Tommy tries to teach his protege that “you don’t play the cards, you play the player”.
We wouldn’t consider this the best poker movie by a long shot, but it is certainly worth renting. Look closely and you will see that even in the biggest game in the world, the dealer is using a card dealing shoe.
