As most poker fans assumed, The 51st Annual World Series of Poker, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 26 from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, has officially announced its postponement as a result of COVID-19. It is among the last of the major sporting events to do so, hoping to make up the event in the fall of 2020. Of course, the exact dates are to be determined.

2020 WSOP Postponed

“We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being,” said Ty Stewart, Executive Director of the World Series of Poker. “In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer, and we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on and through partnership with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes.”

Changes are anticipated in the length of the 2020 WSOP schedule as a result of the postponement. Once details are finalized the revised schedule will be announced.

Covid-19 has shut down our world. And we have all discovered by now that even when things begin to get better, life as we have known it will change in myriad ways. Many more of us will be working from home. Most shopping will be done online. And we’ve already heard dire predictions of watching sporting events from home: baseball games might be played with no one in the stands. Poker fans who’ve been anticipating the World Series of Poker are going to be out of luck, as Las Vegas has been forced to shut down its casinos.

While social distancing is still in place, many poker lovers have turned to playing online. Unfortunately, if you live in the United States and you want to play for money in an online tournament, you’re pretty much out of luck unless you live in one of the few states where online gambling is legal, or you know how to work around restrictions while keeping it safe and legal. And, once casinos and poker rooms come back, there will undoubtedly be many changes. There will probably be fewer poker tables to allow for more distance between them, and less players at each table. Not only that, but hygiene will be a major consideration. Chips will need to be cleaned more often, and the poker rooms themselves may be shut down for short periods of time during a work day to allow for custodial personnel to clean the rails and other common areas.
