Here are a couple of thoughts to help you predict the score of the upcoming Texas A&M Aggies vs. the Mississippi State Bulldogs football game this Saturday in Starkville.

Kenny Hill has 27 completions of more than 20 yards, which means the Aggie offense has more than 400 passing yards per game. At least seven receivers have 100 receiving yards in five games. Those guys are hard to stop, too, averaging eight yards after the catch. And, MSU has allowed the most passing yards in the SEC per game. Sounds like Kenny Trill just has to throw the ball around a lot to win this one.

But not so fast. Dak Prescott, the 6’2”, 230 QB for the Bulldogs is pretty impressive, too. He’s a confident thrower with great accuracy and he’s the team’s second leading rusher . . . kinda like someone we know very well. They also make the pass look like a run, so much so that our safeties will have to be very careful not to over-commit. And they have numerous offensive weapons as well.

Keys: Ags need to protect Hill, strike fast and challenge the Bulldog’s secondary. Ags defense needs to put lots of pressure on Prescott. If both things happen, we predict the Aggies will win it.

During the long wait until the football season begins again, which for Aggie fans like me is August 28 when Texas A&M plays the South Carolina Gamecocks, and the even longer wait until the November Nine face off against each other at the WSOP Final Table, there’s not a whole lot that gets me excited (other than my beautiful wife, of course).

So, we decided it was time to do a redesign of the Texas Poker Store website. The site has had the same look and feel since we began selling poker-related products online three years ago. We have probably doubled or tripled the amount of products we offer, but the site has remained the same.

We originally designed the site in shades of brown, with a wood-grained, down-home Texas country feel to it. That look was important in establishing our brand identity. Once we started to become recognized, we didn’t want to mess with success, so we didn’t make any changes. Then, we got into social media, and when it came time to design a business page for Facebook and then for Twitter, we wanted something eye-catching, but also more closely aligned with the look associated with poker sites. That meant bold primary colors, lots of black, red and green chips and a hand of cards. We used a variation of that design for our blog site as well. And our friends and fans started reacting to it, letting us know they loved the new look.

We realized that our brand was really our name and our logo, consisting of the Texas Lone Star and TPS in a circle and that everything else could change; it didn’t matter. So, to maintain a consistent identity across platforms we’ve redesigned the store to share the same look as our social sites, incorporating our logo, the chips and the best damn hand you can draw in any standard poker game . . . a royal flush.Win this 300 Chip Set

We’re launching the new site tonight and we’re excited. We’re so excited that we want to give something away! The tenth person who lets us know they like the new look by sending us an email from the contact page at TexasPokerStore.com – will win this 300-piece poker chip set in an aluminum case, complete with two decks of standard poker cards, a dealer button and blind buttons.

Anyone who follows this blog knows that we’re huge Aggie fans, especially when it’s football season.  That’s why it shouldn’t surprise you that we loved it when we discovered that an Aggie, Jonathan Gaviao, just won the World Series of Poker Circuit Harrah’s Tunica, taking home his first gold ring and $181, 757 in prize money.

The victory is just most the recent in a string of successes for the young pro. Barely two weeks ago he finished 14th in the record-breaking 1,428-entry Circuit Main Event at Choctaw Casino. He earned $24,098 for that performance

Jonathan GavioGaviao is a 23-year-old professional poker player from College Station, TX. A student at Texas A&M University, he is currently on a hiatus for missionary work. Most people probably don’t think of poker right off the bat when they think of missionary work, but for Gaviao, they seem to work hand-in-hand. In fact, Gaviao said that his faith and the perspective it shed on the situation is a reason for his success. Judging by the amount of poker chips he’s scooped, I wouldn’t argue it.

Gig 'Em “I felt really confident when we got down to four-handed and I took over the chip lead,” Gaviao said of his run. “I felt like I was playing really well. I knew that whatever happened, it happened for a reason and I was alright with that. Whether I won or lost; there’s more important things in life.”

That might not work for most poker players, but it sure seems to work for Gaviao. GIG ‘EM!

Texas A&M Aggies vs Tennessee Vanderbilt CommodoresAs we head into the Aggie game against Vanderbilt, we”re going to keep it simple. The Ags are coming off a very disappointing 45-41 loss to Auburn, which included an uncalled horse-collar on Johnny that many believe would have changed the outcome. The Commodores beat Georgia and should be coming to Kyle Field high off their win. Despite playing their worst game this season, the Aggies still have one of the best offensive lines in CFB. They will have to be close to perfect this Saturday under two potential scenarios.

The first is that Johnny plays despite his shoulder injury. We all know that JFF is dying to play. He was incredibly tough, and in obvious pain, when he returned to the game last week, so even if he’s hurting, we know he’ll be out there if he gets the okay. If  he plays, his O line will have to give him the protection he deserves on every play; they’ll have to leave it all out there the way he does. If the medics feel that playing could cause further damage to his shoulder, however, then he’ll be sidelined. If Johnny has to sit and Joeckel plays, the line will have to adjust to his style of play and take the pressure off him. They will have to win the line of scrimmage on virtually every play in either case. Either way, expect to see a whole lot of Trey Williams.

Defensively, there’s not much more to say. By now we know that our defense is struggling mightily with too much inexperience out there. We’ve seen spurts of excellent D, but it has only come in spurts and there’s nothing to indicate that this situation will improve by the leaps and bounds we had hoped for. So, we just have to score more points than Vandy scores. We predict that the Aggies will do just that and get back in the Win column.
