This should have been the 50th Anniversary of the most prestigious, and most highly anticipated event in the poker world – The World Series of Poker, but thanks to Covid-19, many poker fans consider it a travesty.

The online “World Series of Poker” which began on July 1, featured 31 events that are being held on the online poker site of the organization, WSOP.com. These 31 events will require that players have to be on the grounds in either New Jersey or Nevada to play in the tournaments as WSOP.com is only available in those two states. So, while “anyone can play,” you’re going to have to figure out some arrangements for play and look to spend some time away from home (at least that is somewhat like the live WSOP).

Then, the remaining 54 events (from July 19 to Sept.6) will be played out on GGPoker – Home of the WSOP 2020 Online Bracelet Series, partially sponsored by Daniel Negreanu and friends. Of course, to participate, you’d have to go to either Canada, Mexico or another foreign country since those of us from the U.S. are not yet allowed to participate.

So, obviously, online bracelets will be awarded, thus significantly diluting the value of the prestigious WSOP prize. Seems a shame. 2020 has been atrocious, especially for live sporting events like Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the 2020 Olympics, so perhaps the WSOP should have bowed to Covid and skipped a year.

Many of our faithful followers know that we have been longtime Daniel Negreanu fans. We love watching him play, with that uncanny ability he has for “knowing” what cards his opponents are holding. We loved his documentary, “Kid Poker” which revealed everything we wanted to know about the man and the legend he became. I always enjoyed his video blogs (Vlogs) during the World Series, when he would invite us all into his life as he explained various poker moves he had made that day, or showed us his exercise routine or how much he  loved playing with his adorable doggies.

Daniel Negreanu with Jim ParisWe were mesmerized watching as his romance with Amanda Leatherman blossomed into marriage in 2019 and of course, we loved it when Jim “Pocket Bullets” Paris, aka my husband, met DNegs at the WSOP and, after chatting with him for a while gave him a signed copy of his memoir, “Them Changes.”

With poker news being a bit slim during the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve been blogging a little less often. But since Kid Poker decided to try to draw some attention to it, we decided to go along for the ride. In a Tweet on Friday, the Poker Hall of Famer put a challenge out that he would win a bracelet in 2020. He also stated that it didn’t matter if it were the online version of the event or, if it happens, the physical version in Las Vegas.

He spelled out the rules: “I’ll take 2.5 to 1 that I win a WSOP bracelet in 2020,” he stated.  This includes the upcoming “online” WSOP in Nevada and New Jersey or during the run that will be held on GGPoker. Negreanu also includes a caveat that, if there are tournaments held this fall in Las Vegas under the WSOP banner (still a possibility), that those too would be included in the bet. “Tough to win against huge online fields,” Negreanu teased as he looked for action.”Will bet up to $1 million. There have already been a bunch of takers, although at first glance it might seem foolish to bet against Negreanu, considering he just missed winning the 2019 Player of the Year and won it in 2018. However, the Kid hasn’t won a bracelet since 2013. Would you bet against him? We wouldn’t.

Just think about it, if you make the right bet with him you might win enough to get yourself a poker table like this one with your winnings. Good luck.
