We know, now that the college football season is heading into week three, that some of our longtime followers are waiting for us to begin our notoriously biased series focused on our favorite team, the Texas A&M football team.   You’re probably expecting our well-known “predict-the-winner” contests. Maybe it’s because you’re craving one of our very cool prizes. Maybe it’s because, like us, you’re a rabid Aggie football fan. Or, maybe you’re all just poker player who like to bet on things.

Well, in case you forgot, we only play “predict-the-winner” for SEC games! In other words, we still have one more non-conference game to play –against Nevada — before the real fun begins. (Unless you consider 18 consecutive non-conference wins, the longest active streak in the nation, to be fun!) Although we loved watching the Aggies win convincingly over Arizona State and Ball State, and could not be more pumped about our revitalized “Chavis” defense as well as some of our exciting, and serious contenders for super-stardom, we know it doesn’t get real until we play our SEC opponents.

So to get you all ready for SEC football, the following are some SEC-West highlights:

The Aggies first SEC battle will be against Arkansas on Sept. 26th. The Razorbacks suffered an embarrassing loss against Toledo last week and have to face Texas Tech before playing the Aggies. Let’s just say that doesn’t look good for the Hogs.

The Tide will play Ole Miss this week and will be counting on their defense to stop the highly explosive offense from Mississippi. And Auburn, who looked nothing like they were supposed to look in their narrow win against Jacksonville State, have a scary SEC contest against LSU this week.

So to sum it up, at least for the SEC West, the Aggies will continue to impress and let guys from deep in the depth charts play a lot of minutes to get them ready for conference play. And the other teams will be figuring things out, which they better do quickly before the Ags run the table.

The Lumen Poker TableIn the mean time we’ll be working on our newly re-designed Texas Poker Store website that should be ready for re-launch by end of next week. Until then, shuffle your chips and we’ll see you at the tables.

It’s the first of January, 2015. Unbelievable. Almost everyone seems to agree that 2014 went by very quickly and most are also glad that it’s over. We’re ready for 2015, are you?

On the other hand, it was a pretty good year for the poker world, with the World Series of Poker winners taking home record prize money. It was also a good year for The Texas Poker Store, as interest in playing poker and poker-related supplies continues to grow. We have some big plans for the new year in terms of expanding our product line and offering y’all some amazing deals which we can’t wait to share with you. We will also be running some more contests for chances to win great prizes; we know everyone enjoys those.

Of course, it will be a long eight or nine months until the next Texas A&M football season, which most of you know is our other passion. It was an up and down year for the Aggies, and the first year we’ve ever had contest winners who bet against our favorite team. Fortunately, we ended the season with a victory in the Liberty Bowl against West Virginia and a tantalizing glimpse of what is to come in terms of our talented young players. Then, in a HUGE “get” for the team and the 12th Man, Kevin Sumlin managed to lure John Chavis away from LSU to be our new defensive coordinator. We’re talking Wrecking Crew potential, folks, so we’re all very excited.Texas Poker Store Tournament Package

So bring on 2015; we will get into some poker tournaments while we wait for football season to begin in August.

The fact that LSU dominated the Aggies in every aspect of the game played on Thanksgiving, and the fact that the Aggies looked pretty bad for most of the game (couldn’t get any offense going, couldn’t stop the Tigers from plowing through them on the same three or four running plays) didn’t make it any easier to actually have an opportunity to win the game in the final minutes (when things were finally gelling) only to have a bad call by the refs decide the outcome. Hopefully, Kyler Murray remains committed to Texas A&M, along with some of the other big name recruits we’re counting on for next season, because this team never really got it together. Neither Kenny Hill nor Kyle Allen has been the spark that was needed, that guy who can put the team on his back and will it to win, proving how very much we missed “Johnny.”

We don’t know yet which bowl we’ll be playing in with our 7-5 regular season record or what team we’ll be battling. We DO know that it will be played without DC Mark Snyder, who was “relieved of his duties” following the game; it’s a pretty safe bet that his bags were already packed.

I-may-be-bluffin-girlsWe also know that we had a winner at The Texas Poker Store. We had an incredibly close prediction by Richard Marks, who chose LSU over the Aggies by a score of 28-17. Not only did he come away with the 300 Poker Chip Set, but we think he should be a regular at the poker tables; he’s definitely a winner!

It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow, on Thanksgiving, the Aggies will be playing in their last conference game of the season. It was a difficult season, too, with so many ups and downs, so many great expectations and so many disappointments along the way. What we know is that we have some amazing young talent on the squad and that the future of this football team looks incredibly promising. But what about the immediate future? What about Thanksgiving night, in front of a national audience, at Kyle Field?

Had things gone slightly differently in a few of our games (okay, maybe very differently) this game could have meant something else; it could have been HUGE. But it still means a whole lot to Aggie fans. It could mean going out on a high rather than with the bitter taste of that heart-breaking loss against Mizzou (played without five of our best defensive players, btw) as our last regular season memory. The possibility of a better bowl game and a far more respectable record will be on the line. But most importantly, it would mean that we finally figured out how to beat LSU, a team that has had our number the last two years of SEC play. That’s because LSU plays that old-style, pound the ball, ram it down your throats running game and stops their opponents from scoring with their big, strong, powerful defense. We do NOT match up well.

a-n-m-lsuYet hope springs eternal in the hearts of college football fans, especially the ones in maroon and white. We have the talented freshman quarterback, Kyle Allen, getting better every day, who can sling that ball to an array of great receivers, from Speedy Noil to Josh Reynolds to  senior Malcome Kennedy to RSJ. Those guys have proven they can be play makers; they will have to be against LSU’s deep and physical secondary, fifth best in the country against the pass. If Allen has the time, which he might since LSU has not been putting much pressure on quarterbacks this year, it will be up to the receivers to battle it out with the safeties and corners in the backfield.

So, some questions are: will our defense be able to stop the the Tigers’ running game? Will they be able to hold their own in the trenches where LSU dominates or against their bruising running backs and 295-pound tight end, Dillon Gordon? Will the Aggies be able to get any kind of a running game going so that every down doesn’t become a predictable passing play? Will Myles Garrett be the kind of impact player he has been before his concussion and that we need him to be on Thanksgiving? Will the entire Aggie football team be able to hang with the physically abusive team from LSU or will they get over-powered a third time?

If the Aggies stay focused, physical and intense, if they want this win more than the Tigers do, if they want this win for their seniors, they can win this game. And that would be a helluva good reason to give thanks.Poker Chip set from the Texas Poker Store
