Last week we featured four more celebrities that always capture our attention when they are sitting at a poker table. Sometimes you’ll catch them laser- focused on their hand; you can almost see the wheels turning in their heads as they hesitatingly splash their chips in.

Christian Slater - Phil Hellmuth - SlashOther times you may catch any one of them goofing around with some superstar POKER PLAYERS like in this picture with film star Christian Slater on the left, superstar poker player Phil Hellmuth in the middle, and Rock n Roll superstar Slash.

Celebrity poker lovers come in all sizes, varying skill levels, and various degrees of taking the games they enter into seriously. Most celebrities I have witnessed seem to be very seriously committed to the game.

Michael PhelpsTake one of the most beloved Olympic legends of all time, Michael Phelps. Although he hasn’t quite broken through yet, he has cashed about a half dozen times and if he keeps practicing and enters more tourneys, he just might push through and win more. After all, he’s Michael Phelps!

Paris HiltonWhen or where was the last time you saw or heard that Paris Hilton was in the house? Well, if the house happens to be a poker room then you may have seen her up close and personal. She loves poker so much that it has been reported she once bet away her Bentley Continental GT and she still runs to the tables to play her favorite game.

MiniMe Verne TroyerThen there was Mini Me, Verne Troyer, of the Austin Powers movies, who unfortunately passed away this past April. He will be missed by fans of his films and by many who remember this 2′ 8″ giant at poker tables around the world.

Pamela AndersonHow many of you lusted after Pamela Anderson  in the “Baywatch” television series? She still has a huge fan base worldwide and over the last several years she’s added a whole new fan base through her appearances at poker tables everywhere. If you play often enough, you might get lucky and spot her pushing chips across the felt.

There are a lot more television, film, and sports personalities who love to hit the poker tables at their closest casinos in hopes of making a deep run . . .  and maybe even reach a final table at their favorite tournament.

Oh well, guess we probably won’t be seeing Michael Phelps anytime soon at the poker tables. The all time Olympic champion has done it again; he has now broken the Olympic record for most medals, set by former Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina, when he and his three teammates received Gold in the men’s 4×200 relay; he now has 19 Olympic medals, with a couple of events still to come.  By the way, the U.S. now has a total of 25 medals, 10 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze and it’s just day five…Go Team USA, Go Team USA, Go Team USA!

Nevertheless, I would still love to see Phelps playing at some of the  Celebrity Poker events. The only problem is that his face always displays his emotions, from excitement to disappointment. He would probably give off so many tells that he’d be an easy mark. That is, unless he stopped by the Texas Poker Store, bought a bunch of poker books and read up on how to control his poker face.

There have been quite a few professional athletes who have turned to the poker felt. Boxing champ Antonio Harber did it in 2007 and 2009, Paralympic gold medalist Marlon Shirley competed in 2009. Even NFL legend Emmit Smith tried it out in 2010, Orel Hershiser participated from 2008-2010 and this year, at the WSOP, we saw Roberto Luongo, arguably one of the NHL’s best goaltenders and goalie for the gold-medal winning Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

So far, in the 2012 Summer Olympics Michael Phelps has failed to win a medal and looked shocked when he realized that his medal streak was now broken.  So it’s not that much of a stretch to wonder if maybe Phelps, like so many other great athletes, will be attracted by the World Series of Poker Main Event and try out for the poker felts. I know I would root for him if I saw him at the poker tables. Who knows, maybe he can add a nice gold bracelet to go along with all those gold medals. What do you think?
