In less than two months the World Series Of Poker returns to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, starting with Event #1: The Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em and running through 66 Events before reaching Event #68 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event.
The action starts May 27th. The questions is, what are you doing to get ready, to improve, to psyche yourself out and go for it this time? Have you practiced, practiced practiced? … Have you studied what the pros do? Have you read any instructional books or watched any videos? If not, maybe you should pick up some advice from the Mike Caro’s Poker University section of our website. Mike Caro is regarded as one of the world’s foremost authorities on poker strategy, psychology, and statistics. His books and videos could be just what you need to get some great pointers for this year’s WSOP.
This could be your year; you can start for as little as $565 buy-in into the Colossus with a $5 million guaranteed on May 29th. As the WSOP’s own promos claim; “A thousand reasons to play – Millions of dollars to win.”
I have a sign over my desk that says, in all CAPS, – “BLUFFING” and then, underneath it says “A Pair of Balls Beats Everything!” I do believe it often takes some major cojones to bluff and thus that sign could be right some times. However, there really is more to bluffing than just splashing your poker chips on the table in hopes that everyone is going to be frightened away.
I have definitely gotten away with some pretty crazy bluffs and I’ve definitely been burned by some extremely gutsy bluffs. I’m still learning about when it’s smarter to bluff or fold. Most of my learning has come from trial and error at the various poker games I attend. I also have watched a lot of tourneys on TV and have even gone to the WSOP and carefully watched it unfold in front of me all the way to the Final Table. And I have witnessed some serious bluffs that certainly would qualify as reminders of what the sign over my desk says; “A Pair of Balls Beats Everything!”
But I think that a little bit of studying can’t possibly hurt and is sure to go a long ways in mastering the art of bluffing. I recommend reading “Mike Caro’s Most Profitable Hold ‘Em Advice“. Check out Chapter 6 – Bluffing Concepts, then hit the tables and see how your cojones hold up.
I get a lot of calls, FaceBook messages and way too many texts asking questions about what to do to at the poker table when playing Texas Hold ‘Em … What should I do with a little Ace, or a small pair in the middle position, or should I try bluffing with nothing in late position?
My answers are always pretty much the same; I don’t know! What you can do varies a lot, and highly depends on who your opponents are, how many players are left, how many chips you still have, etc. etc. There really are no pat answers. I make my moves based on a zillion little facts but at the end of the day I go with my gut instincts. Sometimes all you really need to do is trust them.
I prepare myself before every game by remembering some of the golden rules I’ve heard from the legends of poker like Phil Negreanu, Mike Caro, or Antonio Esfandiari. Never play drunk. Don’t gamble with more than you can afford to lose. Never play pissed off (on tilt). Check out what Esfandiari has to say about playing on tilt in the video below.
Follow the advice of the legends, apply the golden rules and have fun. See you at the tables.
We’ve continued to grow each year and every year we have enjoyed building relationships with new and repeat customers. Nothing makes us feel better than hearing from a customer like Randy Schneider, who sent us the following email: “I ordered one of your Nighthawk poker tables with a black felt surface cloth, then realized that I would rather have a red felt speed-cloth and you guys changed the order immediately. Then my wife decided that red would not go in our game room and once again I asked if you would mind changing it to a blue felt. Once again you did that without hesitating and delivered the perfect table right to our front door. Your customer service is the best I have seen in a long time. Thank you.” Nothing gives me more satisfaction than knowing we made a customer happy, simply by providing good customer service.
To that end we also try to add value by bringing you new products, especially those that will help you with your game. For example, after receiving a couple of requests for books by Mike Caro, we decided to add the entire collection of the “Mad Genius of Poker” Mike Caro’s poker books. We have Caro’s Book of Poker Tells, Caro’s Most Profitable Hold ‘Em Advice, and Caro’s Secrets of Winning Poker, along with other books and videos that we believe will help propel you to the final tables more often than not. Caro acts as a consultant to many casinos and is the founder of the Mike Caro University of Poker, Gaming and Life Strategy, the world’s first permanent poker school.
We’ve also just added a new product called the FeltLite Wristband. As you know, casinos and card rooms are often dark, but with this innovative wristband your cards don’t have to be. Also, many players like to wear sunglasses while playing. You’ve seen it . . . players taking seemingly forever to peel back their cards, trying to read them. Players also suffer from eye fatigue associated with long playing sessions and tournaments, making it even more difficult to see the cards. FeltLite was specifically designed to address these issues by offering a simple solution to safely illuminate your starting poker hand. It not only has a function, but it’s also a cool accessory, especially if it’s customized!
