Although our blog focuses mainly on poker for obvious reasons, I have to get this out of the way quickly. It’s college football season and I’m stoked!

UCLA vs Texas A&M AggiesFor those of you who are regulars, you know that we’re huge Texas A&M football fans at the Texas Poker Store.  That’s why I can’t wait for the Aggies to open their 2016 season tomorrow (Saturday) at the “Home of the 12th Man”, Kyle Field, against the 16th pre-season ranked U.C.L.A.  Bruins. SEC vs. Pac-12 and all the hype that goes with it.

This is definitely a Big-Time Game to begin the season.

2016AggiesvsBruins2It’s also a game that might set the tone for the season. It might show us what we need to know about how good Trevor Knight is and how much protection he can count on from the O-line. Jermaine Eluemunor, and youngsters Colton Prater and Eric McCoy will have their hands more than full in the trenches against the highly talented veteran UCLA  defenders, especially a healthy Eddie Vanderdoes, but if they manage to hang in there, it will pave the way for our ground game, which HAS to improve significantly to make a run in the SEC.

Then there’s our incredibly talented roster of receivers. Will Knight be able to connect with Christian Kirk, Josh Reynolds, Ricky Seals-Jones and the rest of the Aggie receivers? And will they be able to hold on to the ball against the experienced UCLA secondary?

Maybe most importantly, can the Aggie D stop the Bruins’ talented star QB, Josh Rosen? We know that DC John Chavis expects Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall to pass rush the hell out of him. But that only works if the rest of our defense can: a) stop the run and b) cover UCLA’s wideouts, who definitely know where to be and how to catch those bullets from Rosen.

It’s almost impossible to predict anything with certainty before the first game of the season. Even when your new OC, Noel Mazzone, is the Bruins’ old OC. There are always unknowns, no matter what you think you know. UCLA is favored to win by about 3 points by most pundits. Not being a pundit, I’m going with the Aggies.

So here we are again – Bowl games and New Year’s Eve. It’s hard to believe another year has passed at the speed of light, we have played a lot of poker hands, watched a lot  of football games, played a lot of music and now are ending the year with our favorite college football team, the Fighting Texas A&M Aggies going up against the Louisville Cardinals in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.  Music City Bowl

What Aggie fans are hoping for is a fourth straight Bowl win under Kevin Sumlin, basing their hopes primarily on Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall’s ability to sack the QB and dominate the Louisville offense. On the other hand, the Cardinals’ D has been extremely tough against opposing offenses, and the Aggie offensive line has had plenty of trouble with less talented teams. Add to that the fact that Jake Hubenak, A&M quarterback, will be making his first career start . . . in a Bowl game.  Hubenak, however, has a strong, accurate arm and if the Ags get Tra Carson running the rock early and then let Hubenak choose his receiver, we are betting on the Aggies winning this match-up in a close game. We don’t have much longer to wait; the game is on in less than an hour!

Then, tomorrow night it will be New Year’s Eve. Unbelievable. We’re going to stay home and enjoy a quiet poker game among friends as we usher in 2016. Happy New Year to all!

Despite their loss to the Crimson Tide, Texas A&M at 5-1, is still very much alive in the SEC West. First of all, Kyle Allen is a very good quarterback who had a very bad day. As he himself put it – he and Peyton Manning each had three pick sixes; it happens.

The Rebel’s quarterback, Chad Kelly, has also been very good, leading the league in passing yards. But he just came off a bad outing himself, throwing two interceptions in Ole Miss’ loss against Memphis.

So, with both teams coming off losses, who has the edge? It’s a close one. The Aggies have tremendous talent on offense, with Kirk, Reynolds, Seals-Jones, Noil and a host of others. If they take care of the football they should be able to outrun their coverage. And the Aggie defense has been stellar, at times even spectacular, which they will need to be against the Rebel’s very talented set of receivers, including wideout Laquan Treadwell. Conversely, the Rebels can defend the pass well, and the Aggie safeties have been aggressive in busting up plays all over the field.Aggies vs Ole Miss football

The best defensive player in the league, and probably in the country, wears maroon and white and is named Myles Garrett. He is a game-changer just being on the field. He’ll be matched up against offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, which should be a great battle. And if Robert Nkemdiche is healthy and ready to suit up, he’ll be making a lot of trouble for the Aggie O-line.

That’s a lot of talent competing for a game they both need to win. It will be a high-scoring contest, but if the Aggies are for real, this is when they prove it.

We had a lot of final score predictions for this week’s big match-up between the Texas A&M Aggies and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, but our winner,  with the closest  prediction of 30-21, is an Old Ag himself, so he was not only happy to win this week’s prize of an NCAA Decorative Mirror, but also thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy the Aggies incredibly well balanced win over MSU.

Aggies BTHO BulldogsThe Ags had an explosive offense in the first half, getting off to a two touchdown lead with some brilliant play-calling, a close-t0- perfect Kyle Allen, some mixing and matching with Tra Carson, Christian Kirk and company and Josh Reynolds making some monster catches. When they sputtered a bit in the second half, the defense looking formidable with Myles Garrett, Dae Dae Hall, Amani Watts, Donavon Wilson and too many other stand-outs to name, stepped up big time to hold Dak Prescott and crew to their lowest scoring game of the season.

After all was said and done, the Ags are now 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in the SEC and are going into their “bye” week ranked #9 in the AP poll. Which, of course, for all big-time football fans, sets up what has to be one of the biggest games of the season and in the country on October 17 – The Aggies vs. the Tide. That’s one no college football fan will want to miss. Congrats to the Aggies, and to Mr. Paul Marvin.

We’ll see you at the poker tables Mr. Marvin.
