So as always, we are beginning to feel the excitement of another thrilling World Series of Poker. And as always, there is already a lot of mumbling going on about who will be there. We know that a few of our friends will, including the Alexander brothers from McAllen, Texas. (James Alexander made it all the way to 19th place at the main event and took home $285,408 last year). We will be cheering for both Duane and James from the rails.

Pocket Bullets Paris at WSOP 2013We’re sure that a lot of the older warriors, like Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, and maybe even one of the oldest warriors, Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, will show up. Riess ‘The Beast” Ryan will most likely be there to try to make it two titles in a row. Who knows, it’s still to early to tell, but PokerNews has put out their annual “Watch Out For” list of rookies. They include some very serious newbie players that we would exercise caution with when sitting with them at the same poker tables. Here is PokerNews list of seven to watch at this year’s WSOP:

  1. Ole Schemion – 21, from Germany
  2. Dominik Panka – 22, from Poland
  3. Lukas Berglund – 21, from Sweden
  4. Jordan Westmorland – 24, from America
  5. Christoph Vogelsang – 28, from Germany
  6. Alen Bilic – 25, from Bosnia
  7. Mateusz Moolhuizen – 24, from The Netherlands

We will be keeping a close watch on these guys, and we will definitely be cheering for our friends, the Alexander brothers. We hope to see y’all there.

I hope you all are sticking to your poker-related and other resolutions ten days into the New Year. Did you guys know about GPI—it’s the Global Poker Index—a technical rating system for poker players. Ole Schemion leads the list, but my man Dan “The Kid” Negreanu is a close second. Talk about grit and determination. Great start to an endless career. Olé!

2014 brings us some pinchy news too. Justin “BoostedJ” Smith, was recently busted, just like his alias, for collaborating with mafia running an illegal site. Hmm . . . I never really made close poker friends. Well done, Vinnie! Jokes aside, as singer Tommy Edwards would put it – “It’s all in the game!” But Id say, if there’s “Money for nothing, and chicks for free” there’s gotta be ‘Trouble, spelt with a Capital Tee.” Our Million Dollar Babies tend to shake it off easily and get on with the game, so I’m not too worried.

Dibella and LeFrancoisNow, back to business. Pokerstars Carribean Adventure 2014 (PCA) hosts its Main Event at the Atlantis Casino in the Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas! Yes, rub it in. As if gambling for a living wasn’t enough, they get to gamble in heaven! This time we have 2011 WSOP Bracelet winner Pascal Lefrancois, and 2012 PCA Main Event winner John Dibella on the heater. The regulars seem to do it again and again!

I’ve watched too many poker videos and tried to understand how they do it, and other than technical babble, I think it’s something to do with extreme focus. I remember  preaching my FIST theory to my friend in 2012. Hold out two fists. You have to practice one FIST – Focus, Intuition, Solitude, Technique . . . and you have to eliminate the other FIST – Fear, Indecisiveness, Somber, Tilt. These guys are doing exactly that. Almost like meditating at the poker table. As I get ready to channel my energies in 2014 from poker to some of my other hobbies, I’ll be playing at the Rumba Cafe Columbus tonight – music, not poker!

Keep your FOCUS!
