Although our blog focuses mainly on poker for obvious reasons, I have to get this out of the way quickly. It’s college football season and I’m stoked!

UCLA vs Texas A&M AggiesFor those of you who are regulars, you know that we’re huge Texas A&M football fans at the Texas Poker Store.  That’s why I can’t wait for the Aggies to open their 2016 season tomorrow (Saturday) at the “Home of the 12th Man”, Kyle Field, against the 16th pre-season ranked U.C.L.A.  Bruins. SEC vs. Pac-12 and all the hype that goes with it.

This is definitely a Big-Time Game to begin the season.

2016AggiesvsBruins2It’s also a game that might set the tone for the season. It might show us what we need to know about how good Trevor Knight is and how much protection he can count on from the O-line. Jermaine Eluemunor, and youngsters Colton Prater and Eric McCoy will have their hands more than full in the trenches against the highly talented veteran UCLA  defenders, especially a healthy Eddie Vanderdoes, but if they manage to hang in there, it will pave the way for our ground game, which HAS to improve significantly to make a run in the SEC.

Then there’s our incredibly talented roster of receivers. Will Knight be able to connect with Christian Kirk, Josh Reynolds, Ricky Seals-Jones and the rest of the Aggie receivers? And will they be able to hold on to the ball against the experienced UCLA secondary?

Maybe most importantly, can the Aggie D stop the Bruins’ talented star QB, Josh Rosen? We know that DC John Chavis expects Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall to pass rush the hell out of him. But that only works if the rest of our defense can: a) stop the run and b) cover UCLA’s wideouts, who definitely know where to be and how to catch those bullets from Rosen.

It’s almost impossible to predict anything with certainty before the first game of the season. Even when your new OC, Noel Mazzone, is the Bruins’ old OC. There are always unknowns, no matter what you think you know. UCLA is favored to win by about 3 points by most pundits. Not being a pundit, I’m going with the Aggies.

Most of our followers know that around this time every year we ask our poker-loving fans to indulge us as we focus on our favorite team –the fightin’ Texas A&M football team—as they begin SEC play.

The fun begins this Saturday night at 6 P.M. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington between #14 Texas A&M and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Will it be the Aggies or the Hogs who win the Southwest Classic?

It’s not just that the Aggies are 3-0 and the Hogs are 1-2 coming into this contest that gets our blood pumping. It’s the revamped Texas A&M-John Chavis defense, led by DEs Myles Garrett and Dae Dae Hall leading the SEC with 15 sacks, the return from injury of some of our experienced linebackers, and the outstanding defensive line that’s been winning the battle in the trenches. And it’s the always explosive Aggie offense, with QB Kyle Allen and his uber-talented group of wide-receivers, including Christian Kirk, Speedy Noil, Josh Reynolds, Ricky Seals Jones and a host of others, along with a vastly improved run game that has mostly featured Tra Carson. And don’t ever forget about dual-threat Kyler Murray!

Of course, the Hogs are desperate for a win to keep their young season from going under. One huge thing they have going for them is their offensive line – the largest (in weight) O-line in both college and professional football. They would like nothing better than to maintain their record for allowing no sacks against the team with the most sacks in the conference. Not only that, but the Razorbacks are currently leading the SEC in passing yards with 916. Go figure.

So it’s time to launch our first round of “Predict the Score.” In case you’ve forgotten the rules:Deluxe Suited Speed Felt Folding Poker Table Top

Whoever comes closest to predicting the final score of the game, without going over, will win this Suited Speed Felt, Folding Poker Table Top, with carrying bag. If there’s a tie, whoever made the correct prediction first is the winner, so you should probably go ahead and do it now!

The Texas A&M Aggies football team had its ups and downs this season, and certainly aren’t playing in the bowl game they might have imagined when they came out of the gate blazing to beat South Carolina. But don’t doubt for a minute that they want to beat the West Virginia Mountaineers this Monday in the AZO Liberty Bowl. In fact, they really need this win to go into the off-season on a high note. Of course, it means a lot to the seniors like Malcome Kennedy and DeShazor Everett, who will be playing their last game for the maroon and white. And, those seniors have the rare opportunity to win four straight bowl games in a row. But most importantly, as Kevin Sumlin likes to point out, the bowl game is really the first step of the next season, and if that’s the case then all Aggie fans will have their eyes on their talented youngsters: Kyle Allen, Speedy Noil, Ricky Seals-Jones and Myles Garrett.bowlanza

This is going to be a close game. The Aggie offense will have to protect the quarterback, block, establish a running game and catch (and hold onto) the passes thrown by an ever-improving Kyle Allen. And the defense will have to put tremendous pressure on the WVU quarterback, Skyler Howard, to stop him from throwing accurately to his number one receiver, All-American Kevin White. It’s not going to be easy because White is a threat similar to Amari Cooper, who the Aggie D couldn’t stop from gaining 140 yards and two touchdowns in their brutal defeat against Alabama. But this isn’t ‘Bama . . . and the Mountaineers, although good, are good for the Big 12 and hopefully not so good against the SEC.TPS Poker Chips

So we’re putting our poker chips on the Aggies to begin next season by getting the “W” in Memphis. Time to put away the poker table and focus on football.

The return of Malcolme Kennedy, who brings his skill, willingness to get smashed over the middle with every play and his senior leadership, Speedy Noil, another emerging leader making the tough – and often spectacular catches and Ricky Seals-Jones improving every week, the Aggies seem to have a chance in Tuscaloosa. But, as Hunter Goodwin explained on TexAgs, the offensive line has GOT to get their fundamentals down: blocking, tackling, not crossing their feet, not pivoting. We need to be running the correct routes. And, we need to establish an efficient running game. The bottom line; if we don’t EXECUTE better, we can’t win.

We’ve improved defensively. Myles Garrett is a beast. DeShazor is still making big plays. Drew Kaser has been punting the ball inside the 15 yard line with regularity, putting the opposition in tough field position. We’ve been forcing a lot of three and outs. Still, teams are making the explosive plays, attacking our perimeter and often running through us. We have a long way to go.

Copag Peek-Index Poker CardsWith that being said, we believe the Aggies can win this game. Alabama has a great defense, but they’re beatable. We’ll find out if the Aggies can do it this Saturday afternoon. But if you want to predict the final score, knowing what you know now . . . click here to make your prediction.
