Each year the World Series of Poker (WSOP) crowns a Player of the Year (POY). I must admit that in the past, I haven’t paid much attention to who won, but this year was different. I knew my all-time favorite poker player, “Kid Poker” himself, was in the running; he entered the WSOP Europe in third place for the coveted title.
Going into the Colossus, the final event of WSOP-E, the title was still up for grabs with four players vying for the POY title: Daniel Negreanu, Robert Campbell, Shaun Deeb and Anthony Zinno. In the end, however, with no one able to surpass his point total, Negreanu was crowned the 2019 WSOP Player of the Year.
The 2019 Player of the Year race included all open bracelet events of the 2019 calendar year, including events at the World Series of Poker at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (May 28 – July 16) and WSOP Europe at King’s Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic (Oct 15-Nov 4).
One could say that Negreanu had himself a helluva good year.He cashed six times at WSOP Europe prior to the Colossus event and cashed an amazing 17 times at the WSOP in Vegas. But perhaps his favorite event of 2019 had little to do with poker.
On May 17, 2019, Kid Poker married the love of his life, Amanda Leatherman, in Palos Verdes, California, surrounded by family, friends and numerous poker stars. What an incredible year!
Hope to see you soon at the Poker Tables, maybe you can be next year’s POY!
