Just four days ago we wrote about the WPT’s Legends of Poker Final Table.  I was rooting for poker icon Phil Hellmuth to finally grab his first WPT Title, but to my surprise and dismay he was denied the big W once again. In heads up play, on the final hand, Art Papazyan, who was holding the chip lead, went all in with  KcQs as did Hellmuth with AhKd preflop. Papazyan got a Queen of hearts on the flop which was all he needed to lock it down and grab the win for all the marbles, including $653,692 in first prize money; a $15,000.00 seat into the season-ending WPT Tournament of Champions; the Hublot watch, and best of all … the title of World Poker Tour Champion. So that was last Thursday night, which got me and my wife slightly upset, because after all we love brats and Phil Hellmuth is the Poker Brat of all time.

Then we rested a couple of days to get our heads into the upcoming football battle between our beloved Texas A&M Aggies and the infamous UCLA Bruins. Sunday rolled in and amidst all the usual pre-game hoopla we were hyped up and ready to watch our Aggies outperform the Bruins and for the first half of the game we weren’t disappointed as they ran over the Bruins with ease, taking a 31-3 lead with 4:11 left in second quarter. UCLA managed to score their first TD to make it 31-10. Not to be intimidated by that the Aggies answered immediately when Trayveon Williams ran for a 61-yard touchdown to give the Aggies a 38-10 lead late in the second quarter.

The third quarter had the Aggies score two field goals to make it 44-10. Then it seemed as if all hell must have broken loose in the Bruins game, and they started getting a lot tougher and ultimately came back and scored late in the third quarter to make it 44-17 and continued their push through the 4th. Scoring 4 TDs for a total of 35 unanswered points giving the UCLA Bruins a 45 to 44 VICTORY over our beloved but now deflated Texas A&M Aggies.

And with that, we’re heading back to the poker tables where our anxiety levels can be a lot calmer.

For only the second time this season, the Texas A&M Aggies are traveling out of the state of Texas to play the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Commodores have some impressive credentials on defense, allowing only 25 percent of third down conversions and ranking fourth in the NCAA in red zone defense. For the Aggies, that sounds pretty intimidating, especially with their meager Red Zone production.

Texas A&M vs VanderbiltOn the other hand, the Aggies have the offensive weapons, know how to score, and if they play up to their potential they should take home a win. That is, if they can figure out which of their two star QBs will start, much less give them the best chance to win. Hopefully, some of their big-time receivers will step up big time and their passing game will click with not as many dropped passes and/or inaccurate throws and Tra Carson will have another 100-yard game.

Vanderbilt’s offense is relatively nonthreatening, assuming they don’t decide to pound us with the run. If they do, the Aggies have proved that they can’t stop other teams from gashing us for big yardage. Vanderbilt can’t beat us passing with our huge pass rush. In other words, it’s anyone’s guess on this one . . . so make your final score prediction, sit back and watch. Our prediction; Texas A&M has too much talent not to win this, but it won’t be relaxing for fans of either team.

In their final SEC home game, the Texas A&M Aggies will take on the Auburn Tigers. It’s expected to be a dogfight, regardless of what the line says. The game is meaningful for both teams, which means that we consider it our responsibility to tell you why before we invite you to play “Predict the Score.”

Auburn has not lived up to its promise, especially considering that their new defensive coordinator is Will Muschamp. They haven’t been an attacking, aggressive unit, and they’ve been allowing opposing teams to convert almost half of their 3rd down chances. Their offense has not shown that they can rush for a lot of yardage, either. But if there was ever a time to revive their running game, it would seem like playing against the Aggie D would be the answer to their prayers. In the last four games, the Texas A&M defense has allowed 230 or more rushing yards; that should be an invitation to pound the rock for Auburn.

On the other hand, the Aggie defense has been tough on passers, rushing and blitzing almost at will, and they have been extremely stingy with third downs, allowing opposing teams to convert a mere 32% of the time.

The bottom line is that if the Tigers commit to running the football, they have a shot at breaking their two-game losing streak and giving themselves a chance to go bowling. So they really need to win this one badly. The question is, can Kyler Murray, with his prodigious play-making skills, and the rest of the Aggie offense pile up enough running and receiving yardage to make it another Aggie win? Although Texas A&M is already bowl-eligible, a win could see them heading toward a 10-3 season. Not bad considering how Aggie fans were feeling a couple of weeks ago.

We had a lot of final score predictions for this week’s big match-up between the Texas A&M Aggies and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, but our winner,  with the closest  prediction of 30-21, is an Old Ag himself, so he was not only happy to win this week’s prize of an NCAA Decorative Mirror, but also thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy the Aggies incredibly well balanced win over MSU.

Aggies BTHO BulldogsThe Ags had an explosive offense in the first half, getting off to a two touchdown lead with some brilliant play-calling, a close-t0- perfect Kyle Allen, some mixing and matching with Tra Carson, Christian Kirk and company and Josh Reynolds making some monster catches. When they sputtered a bit in the second half, the defense looking formidable with Myles Garrett, Dae Dae Hall, Amani Watts, Donavon Wilson and too many other stand-outs to name, stepped up big time to hold Dak Prescott and crew to their lowest scoring game of the season.

After all was said and done, the Ags are now 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in the SEC and are going into their “bye” week ranked #9 in the AP poll. Which, of course, for all big-time football fans, sets up what has to be one of the biggest games of the season and in the country on October 17 – The Aggies vs. the Tide. That’s one no college football fan will want to miss. Congrats to the Aggies, and to Mr. Paul Marvin.

We’ll see you at the poker tables Mr. Marvin.
